The principle is simple. A cylinder at top dead center, with its 2 valves closed, must be totally hermetically sealed. If the cylinder doesn't retain its pressure, it means there is a defect. Injecting a measured quantity of pressurized air into the cylinder and observing possible losses either on the dial or visually (bubbles issuing from the expansion tank) or by ear, you can easily estimate the tightness of the seal of the engine. - worn segments will allow the air to leak out via the oil pan then via the sniffle valve - a defective exhaust valve will let the air leak by the exhaust system - faulty inlet valve will let the air issue from the carburetor or the air filter - a cracked cylinder head or a damaged cylinder head gasket will let the air escape from the expansion tank or from the radiator cap. |
