The specific 18.5 to 21.5mm loosening sockets can be used on the chromed covers which would not have been removed during a previous disassembly and thus damaged or matted on the wheel nut.
Similarly, the 17-19 and 21mm helical sockets are necessary when the wheel nuts are badly damaged and cannot be loosened with a conventional hexagon.
Finally, during reassembly, the anodized and protected 17-19 and 21mm sockets will allow you to tighten your wheel to the desired torque without risk of marking the rim.
